Lean on Pete by Willy Vlautin

Lean on Pete

Willy Vlautin

Fifteen year old Charley is left on his own after his father is killed in a brawl. He develops a kinship with a horse, Lean on Pete, at a nearby track where he takes work. When the horse is in danger Charley steals a truck and trailer and takes him on a journey which turns into a quest for Charley's aunt, the only person he knows will take him in. A disturbing take on the traditional road trip.

Extract
I had the truck in first. It was hard to to get it in second but I did and drove down the road towards the freeway. I didn't mean for it to happen like that, I really didn't. But I could tell by the looks of the other men at the card game that Del was going to sell Lean on Pete to what the people at the track called the killers.
