Pieces of Light

by Adam Thorpe

This book appeals on many levels. It's a thriller and historical mystery, which moves easily between the past and present in the search for the truth. I loved the vivid descriptions of colonial life in Cameroon in the 1920s. The main section of the story is told in the form of letters and diary entries. It's a tantalizing puzzle with lots of twists and turns and a shocking revelation.

My father had two Winchester rifles. He would take one when he went 'on tour', and the other he would leave with my mother. They were for leopards, crocs or gorillas. Or snakes. Anything, in fact, that might just decide to attack the compound, or someone in it.
