The Voyage of the Narwhal

by Andrea Barrett

If you've never read anything about the polar expeditions of the 1850s and find unadorned historical accounts boring, then this is the book for you. You will find all you need to know about arctic expeditions, the mores and ideas of the time in the form of a page-turning adventure.

The brig was still frozen in solidly, but trickles of water seeped down the sides of the icebergs and the floes were bare of snow, sometimes wet on the surface. The broad strip of land-fast ice began to crack as the tides nibbled away at the base, and rocks tumbled down upon it from the cliffs above. Nothing like a lead opened in the solid sea of ice of their cove, not even a crack appeared, but the signs of breaking up were everywhere.
