Little Gold by Allie Rogers

Little Gold

Allie Rogers

This Brighton-based coming-of-age story stars twelve year old Little Gold and her elderly neighbour Peggy Baxter. The pair finds solace in their burgeoning friendship as each battles with their own private demons. I found the serious nature of the novel touching, harrowing and enlightening in equal measure, with the survival instinct of the two leading ladies the most moving aspect of all.

Extract
Peggy lapses into silence, waiting for her mind to clear. Is the struggling to cope, the mum? It’s true that Little Gold is grubby round the edges, eager, always, for some food. But children do get hungry and who is she to judge? Perhaps she should knock on the door, make sure things are okay. But the thought of that, of explaining herself, makes her shudder and reach for her wine.
