The Happiest Days

by Cressida Connolly

Each short story immediately pulls the reader in to the lives of the characters in such a way that you feel that you know them intimately. Stories of sibling rivalry, loss, friendship, family jealousies. Simple, seemingly ordinary tales of ordinary people made lyrical by a great storyteller.

Even more than missing her, I felt guilty. I knew my parents would have preferred it to have been me who had died. I knew I had failed them by surviving Caitlin ... it was my fault she hadn't got better .... I had hated the way my mum never seemed to notice me anymore, after Caitlin got ill.
