Strawberry and Chocolate

by Senel Paz

The screenplay of what is probably the best known film from Cuba, this story gives a real feel for what is like to be an outcast in every sense, yet still be proud of one's roots.

And so, with this and other topics of conversation, we became friends, got used to spending the afternoon together, drinking tea from cups which he said were so valuable, and Sunday lunchtimes became sacred occasions for which we reserved our most interesting discussions. I walked barefoot in his den, took off my shirt and opened the fridge when I felt like it, an act which the shy provincial would see as the supreme expression of trust and informality.
