Green Eyes

Andrew O'Hare

Shaun and Harry are gay teenagers, growing up in Northern Ireland, who begin an all consuming love affair. What makes matters worse is that Shaun is Catholic and Harry is Protestant. Anyone who has ever fallen passionately in love will empathise, regardless of whether you are gay or straight, and weep at the tragic consequences of hatred and intolerance.

Mouths opened automatically, I could feel his teeth. Faint taste of mint and ice cream. Tears were dropping from my eyes onto his cheek. My heart, my whole body was soaring. I was at bursting point with joy. Reluctantly I straightened as I felt his body tense. Only to have him sit up, envelope me in an all-embracing hug and press his lips to my neck below the ear. 'Harry! I love you.' Wrapping my arms around him, shaken by the force of the emotion welling within me. 'I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you.' He raised his head from my neck, his face wet, and we joined our lips again. For the first time in my life everything was exactly right. The world was right. The weather, the breeze, the scent of the pines, everything seemed to be conspiring to produce sheer perfection, absolute bliss in my arms.
