Slow Air

by Robin Robertson

Dedicated to the memory of the poet's father, Slow Air is a book which deals with mortality and the passing of time head on. These poems are beautifully phrased and very moving. The natural world is a constant backdrop, and in their reflecting on the changing seasons the poetry recalls Wordsowrth. Poetry on which to pause and reflect.

The impatience for summer
is desire: ritual, imbedded
hard as a hinge
in the earth's mesh.
From the papery blurb,
the spurred, flesh-green horn
pushes, straining for air -
flexes its distended,
perfect, cleft muscle
out and up through their crest.
