It's What He Would Have Wanted

by Sean Hughes

This is a very sharp and funny observation of all human life. Shea tries so hard, but never quite manages to come out on top. A real page-turner - you can't quite believe that anything else could happen to him.

The council should designate holes into which we can disappear for these moments. Would I like a receipt? she asks. No, just enough painkillers to overdose would be fine, thank you.

Back home, I put the photos on the table, frightened to look at them, frightened to be in the same room as them. The doorbell rang. Normally I would ignore it but surely an interruption was preferable to Dad's sexual endeavours. I opened the door and aged five years. There stood the randy hairdresser, whose name I'd again forgotten.
