The Sea Road

by Margaret Elphinstone

The vividly detailed and spellbinding tale of a woman in a new world: in the eleventh century, Gudrid travels to Greenland and North America on one of the first Viking journeys. I wanted to read fast to find out how she coped, but I had to slow down to think about what she discovers: her role as a woman, her faith, her place in the world.

What you say is true, but Eden was a garden with walls built around it. Adam never laid eyes on the vastness of the worlds. He never named what has not been seen and known. That's what your theologians in Rome don't see. They can't look out of the world from here; they don't know how small we are.
