Lanzarote by Michel Houellebecq

Lanzarote

Michel Houellebecq

Slight in size, but not in content. I enjoyed the bleak comedy - a jaundiced view of a pleasure-seeking society which doesn't understand how to be happy. Left me with a lot of questions - for example, do the descriptions of the barren volcanic landscape hint at Sodom and Gomorrah?

'Did you have a good day?' I said casually. 'I assumed you went on the excursion to Fuertaventura.'
'That's right.' He shook his head indecisively before answering: 'It was shit, complete shit. It ws boring. And now I've been on every excursion the hotel offers.'
'You're staying a week?'
'No, two weeks' he said in the voice of one condemned. He was certainly in a fine mess.
