The Story of Blanche and Marie

by Per Olov Enquist

I felt unease and a sense of dread as the story unfolded in a kind of diary building up through hints and echoes, repeating themes like a piece of music - eerie music lit by the blue glow of radium. But perhaps Blanche does tell us the secret of love in the end?

Her hands were scarred. Love had burned itself into her hands, as if she were an animal and radium a branding iron.
