Waiting for the Night-Rowers

by Roger Moulson

You'll have to re-read a few times to squeeze the last drop of meaning out of these poems. I found them dense, multi-layered, and wriggly when I tried to tie them down. Then - I discovered that character's experience is exactly how I felt aged 9. A great choice for someone wanting to sample a wide range of moods.

It's so high that I slip down the dapple grey sides
stretching my legs on the back of his back. Hold on
to the pole, and the man in the middle comes swinging
like he doesn't care, takes my money and I want to say,
Look at my feet on the stirrups, but dad's turned away.
