The Anatomy of Wings

by Karen Foxlee

11-year old Jennifer is struggling to cope with the damage her turbulent older sister Beth is inflicting on family life in the events leading up to her death. This disjointed and jumpy story does get frustrating at times but is reflective of Jenny's confusion and Beth's restlessness. With poignant and poetic writing, an engaging narrator and wonderful descriptions of small-town Australia, you can't help but feel for all involved.

She had the same blonde hair, the same almond-shaped eyes, the same constellation of freckles across her nose, the same mole on her cheek just like mine. But she was different. ... Beth still held me down and tickled my ribs but sometimes when she did it she stared right through me at something else.
