Ten Little Indians by Sherman Alexie

Ten Little Indians

Sherman Alexie

A group of short (but not slight) stories about native Americans coping with their own personal dilemmas. It doesn't sound it but they are all really funny even while the characters are coping with difficult, even tragic circumstances. These are people you get to know as friends and care about deeply in the space of a dozen pages.

We met at the first mixer dance of our freshman year and soon discovered we were the only confirmed Native American Roman Catholics within a three-mile radius of campus, so we slept together that inaugural night, in open defiance of Pope Whomever, and kept sleeping together for the next three years. It was primary love: red girl and red boy on white sheets.
