Blue Ticket

Sophie Mackintosh

In an unnamed country, but probably the USA, in an unspecified period, but probably modern, young girls are allocated the right or not to motherhood. No arguing, no escape except exile. Atmospheric, exciting, scary, (travelling by bus at night alone, being afraid of pursuit.) The reader may well feel total empathy with the heroine. A great read in a dystopian setting.

Extract
I could not ask anyone. It was between me and my desire: stringy as the rind of a bean, me and it alone at night, with the moon shining down, and the only path visible was one absolutely forbidden to me.

And yet I wanted it, wanted it, wanted it.
