But sometimes she can see that his face is actually cold, an aggressive, challenging, determined and cold face: she can see it when he comes out of the water and when he is sleeping .... It is the coldness of a stranger, the coldness of someone she could spend a hundred thousand years with and yet never get to know. This is an ice-cold fact, a cold-blue fact. Irene had liked this Icelandic expression very much.
