Before I Forget by Andre Brink

Before I Forget

Andre Brink

For the first chapters I really hated this book and it's recounting of the life and loves of this 'Don Giovanni', Chris Minnear, who is a very unsympatheic character. Gradually however I did find the acccount of his life and his last love moving and sincere.

Extract

You died at seventeen minutes to ten this morning. I was of course with you: no one else. The last love of my life? I will soon be seventy-eight, after all. Beyond the age of redemption...Ever since that first day, on New Year's Eve, fifteen months ago, something inside me, something well beyond reason or practicality, know that after you there could not be another woman.
