This Fruiting Body

Caleb Parkin

This collection delivers mind-blowing poetic visions of the connections between the trivia of our everyday lives and the irrepressible life strategies of organisms. Sneaky sarcasms and biological barbs combine to deflate the hubris of our culture. You won’t know if you should chuckle or rub your chin.

Extract

let the doghair gather

let it clog up vacuum filters

we'll celebrate its drifts

nurture its unruly clumps until

this whole house becomes dog

panting and hapless  it sniffs the crook

of the cul-de-sac like an unwashed crotch

its double-glazed eyes  full of sky

its roof all ears  alert to the breeze

its eaves atwitch  as the dogwood

in the garden leans in  whispers

Squirrel

from each bristling leaf

every tile aquiver

From Doghouse
