In the Eye of the Sun

by Ahdaf Soueif

Asya, forced to live a cloistered life by her parents and Egyptian society, longs for adventure and romance. The book follows her life from 18 to 33, describing in intimate detail all of her hopes, fears and dreams. I was compelled to read on to discover if Asya ever achieves the inner serenity and happiness she so desires.

Saif opens the door with a key and they enter a dim and cluttered living room. He walks ahead. Even carrying her suitcase there is that slight spring to his every step. She carries her beige handbag and - main symbol of adulthood - her vanity case. At the far end of the living room he unlocks a door into a big, light bedroom and steps aside to let her pass. He follows her in and closes the door behind him. He puts her suitcase down on the bed, turns and gathers her into his arms.
