These women have no voice and are trapped by what their culture demands. Etaf Rum's story needed to be told and has taken the USA by storm but it doesn't make easy reading.

Isra wondered if this was what it meant to be an American: having a voice. She wished she knew how to speak her mind, wished she could have said these things to Mama: that girls are just as valuable as boys, that their culture was unfair.
