The Illness Lesson by Clare Beams

The Illness Lesson

Clare Beams

An atmospheric novel involving an experimental girls' school. A stress related skin condition, an unscrupulous doctor, flocks of mysterious red birds and a fraught father/daughter relationship add to the mix. At times, this is difficult to read with a disturbing subplot of possible abuse. But recommended for an unusual and thought-provoking experience.

'We’ll be filling a hole in in the educational landscape,' Samuel was saying. 'No one, has done this before. Formed girls into women who can become their own best selves, who can be true partners to their husbands and true mothers to their children. Our school will be a pursuit of the divine in the human.'
