Can a novel be both very funny and terribly sad? I think this is a great example that it can. Alison Solomon gets a lot of heartache but still manages to take herself not very serious. With the help of her some friends and several quirky therapists she gets to grips with a separation, cancer and a rather cute rat in her kitchen.
Of course, not seeing a photograph is just as risky. Imagine a tombola where, even if your ticket is picked (the therapist has a slot for you) the prize isn't the one you were expecting. It's the difference between receiving a bottle of single malt whisky (a great therapist) or a bottle of shandy (a poor one), which sadly applied to a therapist Susan's friend Betty encountered. There was no photo next to Amanda Barren's listing, but from what she'd written regarding her practice, Betty thought her a safe choice. The moment Amanda Barren opened her front door, however, Betty knew she'd made a serious error. Amanda was dressed in a sweatshirt with the words: 'Embrace Your Inner Rainbow' emblazoned across it, plus she had chunks of hair dyed all shades of yellow, puce and bright green. Worse, she was wearing rainbow-coloured Crocs which stuck out from under her very long, very crumpled, green tie-dyed cotton skirt. 'Really, Susan,' Betty had said, 'I couldn't have felt more depressed if she'd been wearing a unicorn onesie.'
