Nothing But Ghosts by Judith Hermann

Nothing But Ghosts

Judith Hermann

This collection of short stories is a showcase for the writer's poignant vignettes of relationships in trouble. The tipping points in communication breakdown between lovers, partners, friends and family are skilfully captured with heart rending accuracy.

Extract

But sometimes she can see that his face is actually cold, an aggressive, challenging, determined and cold face: she can see it when he comes out of the water and when he is sleeping .... It is the coldness of a stranger, the coldness of someone she could spend a hundred thousand years with and yet never get to know. This is an ice-cold fact, a cold-blue fact. Irene had liked this Icelandic expression very much.
