Knockemstiff by Donald Ray Pollock

Knockemstiff

Donald Ray Pollock

The downtrodden Ohio town of Knockemstiff is the glue which holds these short stories together. Although presented as a series of separate narratives, characters jump out of their own stories into those of a neighbour’s tale, so that the lives of the town’s inhabitants become intertwined which lends a communal quality to the collection. An honest and gritty read, it compelled me to continue on after each tale ended.

I’ve lived here all my life, like a toadstool stuck to a rotten log, never even wanting to go into town if I can keep from it.
