Britain is a small, unimportant island inhabited by ancient tribes whose differences create a backdrop of tension in this slipstream crime novel. You'll find yourself immersed in a story of intriguing crime tropes, with good cops bending the rules, psychopaths on killing sprees and big business exploiting the public. 'Too late for that,' said Orva, pulling a carboard file from her desk. 'They've all been sent to the warm halls by the city. But this morning I went through recent, supposedly accidental deaths looking for the same foreign mark. There's another four in the records. One Norse, another Tribal, two Saxons, all on the edge of society, non apparently missed, all seemed to have made an attempt to clean up their lives a month or so before they died. All their deaths were concluded to be accidental.'

'The same killer?' asked Durstan. 'Or one group taking on another?'

Orva hesitated.

'Gut feelings are fine.' Aedith told her. 'Nothing's being written up yet.'

'The timeline, the manner of the killings - assuming these are all killings - suggest one individual. Patient, careful, maybe even charming.'
