The Long Water

Stef Penney

You might think it’s a crime novel but that’s not central, it’s more a picture of a small community in northern Norway over several generations. While there’s a good measure of pain and estrangement, the young people, especially the gay and the genderfluid, offer real hope. And the awkward connection between two old curmudgeons is an unexpected surprise.

There have been too many missing people in my life. In my own family. I don’t know how many is normal. In the natural course of things, the longer you live, the more people you encounter; and some of them will slip through the cracks. I can’t count the number of people I’ve lost track of over the years – but they are not missing. People are only missing once you have tried and failed to find them… Anyway, the first missing person in my life was my father; Maybe I’ll come back to my sister later; If I feel like it.
