About Grace

Anthony Doerr

Winkler is an odd character who has premonitions. Twenty five years after abandoning his wife and child in an effort to save his daughter's life, he returns to Alaska to find out what really happened. Although, for me, it sometimes lacked emotion and I wasn't always convinced by the characters, this strange and compelling novel contains some beautiful writing and wonderful descriptions of snow.

Extract
A cash register clanged. An automatic fan in the ceiling clicked on with a sigh. Suddenly he knew what would happen - he had dreamed it four or five nights before. The woman would drop a magazine; he would step over, pick it up and give it back.
