Nights Beneath the Nation by Denis Kehoe

Nights Beneath the Nation

Denis Kehoe

In 1950s Ireland Daniel delights in his homosexuality and his passionate love affair with Anthony. In modern day Ireland an embittered Daniel begins to lay the ghosts of his past. This is a coarse and sexually explicit story that I found both powerful and moving in its tale of love and loss.

It was sweltering in the sauna, but even so I began to shiver. I felt the blood drain out of my face as I turned to walk away, as he turned away at the same time. 'What the fuck is he doing here?' I asked myself. 'Did he follow me here? Does he know more than he's letting on? Does he want to corner me at my lowest, an old man in a sauna looking for a fuck?'
