My first and final reactions were of anger, frustration and sadness at the racist attitudes of most of the characters. In between is a clever exploration of the personal and social influences which have affected their lives within our multicultural society. An uncomfortable and compelling read. Excellent for reading groups.


She walked down the ward. It was becoming familiar... She no longer peered anxiously across into the nurses' room which guarded the ward, asking for permission and reassurance. The black sister gave her a smile (were there two of them? Did she muddle them up?)
