Whatever Makes You Happy by William Sutcliffe

Whatever Makes You Happy

William Sutcliffe

This books seems fairly ordinary, but deep down it covers thorny family topics and relationships. As a mother of older boys this struck a note with me, I could see myself in all of the characters and felt great empathy towards all of them. The author has shown great insight into the mother son bond - a great read well written and thoughtful without being full of gloom and depression. Honest would be the best word to describe it.

Extract
Although part of him thought that her stay might well end in matricide, and despite the fact that his mother was possibly the most irritating human being he had ever met, Daniel was surprised to find himself pleased to see her, and flattered that she had driven so far to visit him. He somehow felt equal measures of dread and pleasure at the thought of spending time with her.
