The Stone Thrower

Adam Marek

What strangely beautiful stories these are but be warned they can also be odd, surreal and quite brutal! 'Fewer Things' is brief, matter-of-fact and absolutely heart-rending. Each of these stories is totally individual, many of them are quite shocking but each makes you think. This slim volume had a huge impact on me - the stories will continue to haunt me.

I turn my shoulder against the freezing wind blowing in off the sea. Dad slides the fish out of the chick's beak. It's a smooth movement, and at the end of it, when the trumpet-shaped head of the fish comes out, I actually feel relief myself. As if the fish had been stuck in my throat.
