Alice is torn between her mother, adherent of the true religion of the Church of the Plain Truth and her atheist but also arsonist father. Her boyfriend isn't much help either. This is a blackly comic, but inevitably tragic story; the ending stunned me even though I knew what it would be. I dare any reader not to have the same reaction.
Jude told Alice there were many things that would need clearing up if they were ever to marry. Not least, her sexual dysfunction. No pressure or anything, he said. But she would have to be fixed first.
'How does it matter?' Alice countered. 'If we love each other and we enjoy other things, how important is penetration?'
