I found this story of orphaned brothers Johan and Adam, who are separated as children and raised apart, a very moving one. The turmoil experienced by the boys is mirrored by the novel’s backdrop of political unrest in 1960s' Indonesia. This dramatic and atmospheric tale is one of love, guilt and betrayal, seen through the eyes of various disillusioned characters, each of whom are searching for their own kind of peace in their own unique way.
