Love, Sex and Frankenstein by Caroline Lea

Love, Sex and Frankenstein

Caroline Lea

Claustrophobic, gothic and threatening, this novel pulls you inside the mind of Mary Shelly as she turns her fury and suffering into power, passion and creativity. Building towards a climatic storm, Mary is tormented by expectation, betrayal, love and desire. Elements of her experience converge in the creation of her own monster- Frankenstein . At times chilling, in essence, this is a story of female awakening, rage and creativity.

Mary's mouth feels full of choking dirt, as if she has swallowed the darkness and rot in the the room, as if it is pressing on her tongue, sliding down her throat, dampening the rage in her chest, turning it to terror. Weeping, she throws her arms around her lover, begs him to forgive her, begs him to love her still. And while she is entreating and begging and weeping, it is as though part of her is observing from above. Something inside her watches with faint disgust as Mary makes herself small and weak and pathetic so that Shelley will scoop her into his arms and comfort her.
