Plainsong by Kent Haruf

Kent Haruf

Written in a very low key style, it rapidly captures your attention. It shows great insight into life in rural America, and into the minds of the two boys and two old men. Lovely!

Midnight. He came back from the bathroom into the glassy room. His brother slept undisturbed in the single bed against the wall. Despite windows in three of the walls, the room was dark. There was no moon. He looked once towards the west, and then stood still. In the sunken vacant house was a flicker of light .... he could see somebody was in the room.
