The Half-Known Life

Simonetta Wenkert

I quickly became absorbed by the story of Lorna and Celia - which grew into the even more powerful tale of Sappho. Although a little confusing at first, this was such a moving and fascinating story which was really brought to life by its evocative settings.

It was siesta time, and in the midday heat the gardens were deserted, with only the rumble of traffic, sirens hooting and the drone of scooters, encircling the park like a buzzy electric garland .... From nowhere, it seemed, a tortoise had appeared and was shuffling dully across the white gravel path towards the shade of some bushes. Fascinated, the girls stopped to watch its progress; and that was when they saw the man.
