The Hungry Ghosts

by Anne Berry

I did not think I could believe in a book half narrated by a ghost - but the characters described are so real that I found their search for fulfilment both painfully true and enthralling. The turbulent times in Colonial Hong Kong are echoed through the emotions of a dysfunctional family who are as restless as the ghosts of the title.

As she listens to echoes of the past, I slide into her and instantly feel my strength returning. I become the scum in her blood. I garland myself with ropes of silver-stranded veins. And in the resonance of each heartbeat I know her every thought, her every memory, her every experience, her every twist and turn of emotion, often before she does, as if they are my own.
