The India House by William Palmer

The India House

William Palmer

England 1956 and three generations of women are each suffering, in their own way, from the legacy of the Indian Raj. Then two events catapult the family from the past, firmly into the present. An easy to read story depicting how social and political developments affect family life.

Extract

It was ridiculous, Evelyn thought, to have no rank or title to call Rex by to others. You could think of and refer to your late husband as the Colonel, the Major, even, at a pinch, as the Captain - though that was a little vulgar this far after the war. But in no way, even as a joke, could you refer to him as the Sergeant.
