A very strange and disturbing book about a prison camp, and a commandant going mad. It is a story of how the officers and the inmates fail to cope, and the effect that it has on them.
The dogs started fighting again. The man excused himself, got up, picked a hose up off the ground in the yard and sprayed the animals. They scattered in opposite directions. He picked one of them up by the collar, took it to the other side and stuck it in a small pen. Minutes later, he returned to his spot, sighed and drank a little more coffee.
'Know what that was all about? Territorial fighting. Fighting over land. Let me ask you senhora: are dogs any different from us? Not in the least.'
