Room on the Sea

André Aciman

Paul, a lawyer and Catherine, a psychiatrist meet by accident and instantaneously hit it off. All the questions you might ask yourself when you reach your sixties, they ask themselves and each other. Are we happy with our lives, married to the same, long-term partners? Did we miss out on things? What has fate in store for us? I found this loving, intimate, lyrical and humorous tale of love and friendship very moving.

‘People used to say that, she said, but when she tried to see for herself in the mirror, she couldn't tell what they were talking about. 'It's like trying to catch your eyes rolling when you stare in the mirror. Impossible! Maybe knowing who we are is an equally impossible task, don't you think? We're constantly looking away.'

`Take the compliment.'

She smiled. 'Trust me, I did.'
